Gone

The tower door burst inward beneath the weight of armored shoulders.

Captain Meydoka was the first through.

His sword was already drawn.

He expected blood.

He expected bodies.

He expected to meet the assassin himself.

Instead…

Silence.

The chamber stood empty.

The barricade had been torn aside, yet nothing inside suggested a struggle. The bed remained untouched. The table still held the Senator’s untouched supper. A single chair lay overturned upon the floor, as though someone had risen from it in haste.

“The Senator!” one of the guards shouted.

No answer came.

Meydoka crossed the room in long strides, searching every corner despite already knowing there was nowhere a man could hide.

Then he noticed the floor.

Tiny black shells.

Hundreds of them.

They carpeted the stone around the doorway like scattered seeds, each no larger than the nail of his thumb. Every one lay motionless, their glossy bodies dull and empty.

One of the younger guards crouched beside them.

“What are they?”

Meydoka lowered himself, lifting one carefully between his fingers.

It weighed almost nothing.

The shell crumbled at the slightest pressure, collapsing into a fine black dust that drifted between his gauntlets.

He had seen insects before.

Nothing like these.

“Don’t touch another,” he said quietly.

His gaze drifted across the chamber.

No blood.

No broken furniture.

No signs of panic.

Only absence.

Then the cold morning air brushed against his face.

The window.

It stood open.

The curtains stirred gently in the dawn breeze.

Meydoka stepped toward the ledge and looked down.

The fortress wall plunged into darkness beneath him. Far below, soldiers hurried between torchlit courtyards, unaware that the man they had sworn to protect was already gone.

No rope.

No grappling hook.

No footprints.

Nothing.

The assassin had entered a room no one could enter.

He had left a room no one could leave.

And he had taken the Lord Senator with him.

Behind him, the chamber remained eerily still.

The men spoke only in whispers now.

No one wanted to be the first to give voice to what every soldier already feared.

Captain Seth Meydoka finally sheathed his sword.

“The gates remain sealed,” he said. “No one enters. No one leaves.”

He turned toward the doorway.

“Search every tower. Every cellar. Every rooftop. Every inch of Ythoriss.”

His men saluted without question.

None of them believed they would find anything.

---

By the time the first light of dawn spilled across the fortress walls, the bells of alarm had fallen silent.

Ythoriss had survived the night.

The city still stood.

Its people would wake believing the danger had passed.

Only Captain Meydoka knew better.

Somewhere beyond those walls walked a man capable of accomplishing the impossible.

And somewhere beyond them lived someone powerful enough to have hired him.

A hurried set of footsteps echoed up the tower stairs.

“Captain!”

Meydoka turned.

The messenger was breathless.

“We’ve found something.”

“What is it?”

The young soldier hesitated.

“It… it’s in the Eastern Wood, sir.”

Meydoka’s expression hardened.

“What did you find?”

The guard swallowed.

“We’re… not entirely sure.”

Without another word, Meydoka was already moving.

Behind him, the empty chamber stood silent, save for a faint breeze whispering through the open window.
